Leadix - Case Study

Leveraging Continuing Education Credits (CEU) for Revenue

Leadix eLearning platform allows publications to provide sponsored courses to professionals

Reed Business Information (RBI, a division of Reed Elsevier) had a portfolio of publications aimed at professionals in the building industry. A significant segment of their audience was made up of architects, who often joined professional membership associations such as the American Institute of Architects (AIA). The AIA and other associations require members to earn continuing education credits to maintain their standing. RBI saw an opportunity to meet the needs of their audience by providing accredited courses online.

What RBI needed next was a way to launch their online university for building professionals quickly, in order to fill the need before competitors cornered the market in that niche. Leadix’s eLearning platform got them up and running with a complete online education site, easy for users to navigate and administrators to update, fully branded with their own custom look and feel, and with robust reporting that helped them make a strong case to interested sponsors – all with quick time-to-market and low startup costs.

Structure and reporting attractive to sponsors

RBI publications Building Design + Construction, Housing Zone and Construction Equipment were ready to provide their own accredited course content. Interested sponsors were also ready, and the eLearning platform made it easy for RBI staff to publish the courses quickly, with minimal training and no particular technical expertise. The site, originally LoginAndLearn.com, was up and running with full eLearning capabilities and completely custom branding, in a matter of weeks.

The site structure was planned to be attractive to sponsors as well as end users. Advertisers can sponsor a single course or an entire campus, making the online university able to meet the needs and breadth of different promotions.

Publications and sponsors both benefit from the detailed reporting system. Some of the data available to RBI and sponsors for the eLearning platform are:

  • Lead data
  • Stats on new registrations and overall traffic patterns
  • Stats on course popularity, exam attempts, pass/fail rates
  • Conversion rates
  • … and much more

Sponsors may also, at the publisher's discretion, receive direct access to the Leadix reporting module. Highly granular permissions ensure that sponsors see only the data authorized to them.

Leadix’s reporting system gives all the details RBI needed to showcase to potential and current sponsors the effectiveness of the online university as a promotion tool.

Ongoing value to publisher, expanded branding

When Reed Business Information divested itself of its building publications in 2010, LoginAndLearn.com was among the properties offered for sale. Scranton Gillette Communications acquired the building magazines plus the online university as SGC Horizon – Building & Construction Group. SGC Horizon rebranded the university as BDCUniversity.com and continued offering content to thousands of returning users.

BDCUniversity.com is aimed specifically at the Building Design + Construction magazine audience. SGC Horizon wanted to create another university for the readers of a sister magazine, Housing Zone. Leadix set up this sister university, HZUniversity.com, with separate branding but powered by the same engine. Courses are easily shared between the two universities from the same database.
