Conducting Research Studies Online with the Leadix Platform
Leadix Online Research platform makes it easy to manage a research study on the web
The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) created a plan for a multi-year, multi-phase randomized study of new nurses transitioning from study to practice. They wanted to find methods to increase retention of new nurses in their field, as turnover and vacancy rates are high in this profession. NCSBN created a model, Transition to Practice, to increase the success of newly transitioned nurses, with key facets including communication and teamwork, patient-centered care, evidence-based practice, quality improvement and informatics. The proposed study would look at the effect of their Transition to Practice model on nurse retention and patient outcomes using formal study techniques.
To launch the study, NCSBN needed a web-based data collection system and central platform from which to provide study-related content and materials. NCSBN had developed an in-house survey system and contracted with a third party provider of education modules, but needed everything else to tie it together. In particular, they needed a platform that could disseminate content on a highly granular basis – giving detailed access to specific items based on permutations of user type (nurse, preceptor, manager, site coordinator), phase, group (experimental, control) and license type (LPN, RN). Leadix was the vendor that met all their requirements.
Full featured online research study web portal easy to use for participants
NCSBN launched their study on time and on budget with Leadix’s Online Study Platform. The web-based data collection portal is functionally intuitive, requiring minimal training and support for thousands of users with various technical skill levels.
Some of the features utilized by NCSBN for their study include:
- Participant management
Logins, user data and profiles for each participant. - Content management system
NCSBN publishes their public and private (study) content easily via Leadix's CMS. - Study notifications/reminders
Automated emails to participants based on workflows. - Dashboard reports and warning lights
Different levels of study coordinators get a birds-eye view of the study users and actions under their domain with a dashboard report. Warning lights indicate delayed or missed steps for easy management. - Private messaging
User-to-user private message feature allows communication among participants while protecting privacy. This feature is available to certain participants while restricted from others, per study guidelines. - Discussions and forums
Certain message boards are also provided to specific user types, while restricted from others, per study rules. - Seamless integration with third party APIs
While Leadix offers education modules, NCSBN had contracted with a third party to provide this service. Leadix flexibly integrates APIs into the platform. - Granular access levels
Based on a user's type, group, phase or license, different content and features are provided or restricted to each participant. Over 44 different permutations are represented in the site structure, but are easily managed with just a few easy selections.
Multi-year study continues to be managed with Leadix
NCSBN continues to conduct the study as planned, with a completion date set in 2014. The hope is that evidence-based practices to increase nurse satisfaction and patient outcomes will be identified by the study, which can then be carried out through licensing regulations.
Leadix is providing ongoing services for the full study data collection period, to the satisfaction of the study leaders.
